The Brisbane Portrait Prize celebrates the city of Brisbane and its people. This is the second year of the Prize, with the Lord Mayor’s Prize of $50,000 attracting over 750 entries. This exhibition presents the work of 75 finalists.
Further artwork can be seen through the Salon des Refusés hosted by the Royal Queensland Art Society and the Under 18 exhibition at Gadens.
Entry into the prize was conditional on both the artist and the sitter having a connection to Brisbane. The result - art that tells the stories of the diverse, resilient, troubled, accomplished, professional, generous and eclectic group of people who make up the character of Brisbane.
The Brisbane Portrait Prize also showcases the best in contemporary portraiture. It demonstrates that portraiture is a genre that still galvanises, intrigues and challenges the most accomplished of contemporary artists.
Portraiture in all its forms, from oil paintings to digital prints, has flourished in the contemporary era. As this exhibition reveals, portraits directly engage us with issues of identity - how we construct our sense of self and determine our values - so we can create meaning and belonging in a challenging global world full of opportunity.
